My first introduction to Shakti Kumar (Simon) came via his music, which I initially heard through a thin wooden wall that joined our rooms at Vidya Prakaash house in Kullu, India. It was the autumn of 1988 when the melodic tones of his voice and guitar would reverberate through the woodwork as he crafted yet another in his already abundant repertoire of musical meditations. This outpouring of creative joy began in the early 1970's when he was taught to meditate and began to study with our Guru, Swami Shyam. Often a single line spoken by Swamiji would become the inspiration for an entire song.

Being such a close neighbour, I soon became acquainted with the man behind the music, the great soul behind the sound. And we quickly became the best of friends.

Anyone who would meet Shakti Kumar, whether personally, or by way of his music, visual art, or architectural design, instantly understood why Swamiji gave him the name he did. In Hindi, Shakti Kumar means 'Prince of Power,' and it is true that his presence carried with it a potent current of noble charm which was very endearing. His exuberance was so contagious that it could transform even the greyest mood into one of laughter and light.

His songs too have the effect of elevating one's spirits, but even without their melodies, they live beautifully as poems in their own right. Neither too embellished nor to spare, they are clear, soulful, and sometimes funny reflections on the river of life and its source. In short, they are like Shakti Kumar himself, an extension of his tender heart, humorous imagination, lively intellect, and free spirit.

Like their creator, these songs have already entertained and inspired so many of us, but happily, with his CD's and books available, they are destined to spread their unique aura of insight and delight still further.
